About
This documentary is based on the underrepresentation of black artists within graphic design history books. I came up with this idea after taking Pierre Bowins Graphic Design History course in the Fall of 2024, as well as listening to Cheryl D. Holmes-Miller’s presentation on her book and reading it “WHERE THE BLACK DESIGNERS ARE.” For this project, I am interviewing Pierre Bowins to understand his professional thoughts on the topic. He covers where the black designers are, a historical overview of American black design, and relates his 2020 art exhibition (A SIN OF OMISSION) to the 1968 art exhibition, Black Artists in Graphic Communication, to discover the underrepresented history of black graphic designers.
